Who Are We ?

Environmental protection and education is the need of the hour.For strengthening the environmental commitment of students at college level in the State, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change (DoECC) had launched the ‘Bhoo Mithra Sena’ programme.

The emergence of Bhoomithrasena in Govt.Model Engineering college can be traced back to 2015,following the footsteps of a nature organization called 'T.R.E.E' and later developing into a fully fledged organization.

Objectives

The main objective of the club is to encourage the college students to appreciate environment.

Provide environmental education opportunities and involve them in addressing environmental issues of the locality.

Conduit the enormous manpower available for the awareness of the society and make students practice and advocate sustainable lifestyles.

The club organizes Seminars, Debates, Lectures , Field visits and talks on environmental issues.

It also arranges visits to Wildlife Parks, environmentally degrading areas etc.

Other activities include cleaning and maintaining the polluted or environmentally degraded sites, planting and maintaining trees in the campus.

Sahasra Vriksha

Activities

Sahasra Vriksha
Bhoomithrasena had recently launched a virtuous initiative "Sahasra Vriksha" in connection with World Environment day 2020 aiming to plant 1000 saplings. "Each one plant as many as you can " is the mantra of Sahasra Vriksha.As we all know the biggest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it. It is high time for us to come out of that notion and do our bit to save our earth .Many people from various parts of India are a part of Sahasra Vriksha including actress Ahaana Krishna and many more. Greening MEC
Bhoomithrasena club in the college organized the project 'Greening MEC' in the academic year 2019-20 with a motive of cultivation and maintenance of organic vegetable garden in the college premises as a joint project of MEC with Kerala Agriculture Department. 'Greening MEC' was initiated not only as a project implemented to maintain vegetable garden but also to create awareness among the students about the needs and advantages of organic farming.
"MEC - Men's Hostel"
It was made sure that the interested students would get an opportunity to get a closer look about necessities and mistakes that may happen in organic farming. The saplings and seeds of vegetables including tomato, beans, brinjal, spinach and chilly were planted in the terrace of Men's Hostel by Bhoomithrasena members with the support of teaching and non-teaching staffs of the College on 21st December, as per decided on the meeting held in the campus regarding the need of the project and implementation of the project . More than 50 vegetable kits were planted. The great enthusiasm of the members and support from the staffs paved way for a satisfactory result.
World Environment Day
Students planting saplings on WED
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise awareness towards environmental issues and to take necessary actions to protect nature and our earth. On this day Bhoomithrasena club along with NSS unit of the college organised a student interactive session and tree saplings were planted around different locations within the campus. The event was inaugurated by the respected Principal Dr. Vinu Thomas. Each class of '19 passout batch was given the opportunity to plant a tree and their juniors was instructed to maintain the saplings.
Thanal-Bhoomithrasena 360

For strengthening the commitment of students at the college level and to instill the feeling of nature awareness and conservative need an event was conducted on behalf of Bhoomithrasena and Thanal MEC on July 22nd 2019, as a part of KTU orientation program conducted for the freshmen of Govt. Model Engineering College. The event was organized with the goal of 'one tree for one student' to the newly enrolled 360 students of the college under KTU. As per the goal, on the day an orientation program was organised and 360 tree saplings along with cloth bag were also given away under the name 360 in order to discourage the use of plastic bags.
World Bamboo Day

World Bamboo Day is celebrated since 2009. It is the day when people from all over the world use to raise awareness of the benefits of bamboo and to promote its use in everyday products. On September 6,2019 Bhoomithrasena club along with NSS unit of Govt. Model Engineering College celebrated World Bamboo Day by planting 19 bamboo saplings on the college ground and these saplings belonged to a species called Bambusa multiplex. The event was inaugurated by the respected Principal, Dr. Vinu Thomas by planting the first sapling as a kickstart to a greener world thereby setting an example to the students and staff of the college urging the need to grow and preserve bamboo cultivation.
Webinar on Sustainable living
"Webinar Poster"
At the very critical juncture in the world with the spread of Covid-19, the importance of sustainable living plays a key role. In order to create an awareness on sustainable living and to bring out its importance to everyone a webinar was hosted by Bhoomithrasena and NSS MEC in association with Bring back green on April 28th,2020. The webinar was handled by Wioleta Burdzy Seth. She is the co-creator of young India challenge and co-founder of Human Circle. She is also a trainer, life coach and TEDx speaker. The very respected speaker bloomed all the budding citizens creating awareness on sustainable living and gave ideas on how to lead a simple, healthy and affordable lifestyle. Around 70 participants actively attended the webinar and took away valuable life lessons for a better and sustainable living. The webinar concluded with a doubt-clearing session.
Gem Out of Waste Challenge
In the midst of lockdown Bhoomithrasena along with NSS MEC joined hands to bring out the artistic creativity among the students in an innovative and sustainable way. Gem Out of Waste challenge allowed students to build something innovative out of what was thought as waste. This idea helped to give unique solutions to yield maximum benefits out of the trash and thus contribute towards a cleaner and greener environment. The challenge also helped the students to think out of the box and to get re-energized during the long break. Around 25 students took up the challenge and posted photographs of their own created “gems” in social media and inspired others too.
Water pot Challenge
In the summer of 2020 Bhoomithrasena organized a Water pot challenge understanding the scarcity of clean sources of water with the increasing heat. People were asked to hang water pots from trees or balconies in their houses itself. The water remains cool and hence it is very effective in preventing dehydration in birds in extreme heat. This challenge brought out a simple demonstration of coexistence without much effort. Many people participated in the challenge and uploaded the photographs of their hanging water pots in social media.
